Looking to stay cool and make the most of the sunshine? East Cambs is full of ways to get out on (or near) the water this August.
Whether you’re taking it easy on a boat trip or getting the adrenaline going with wakeboarding, there’s no better time to explore our rivers, marinas, and waterside paths.
Hop Aboard a River Cruise
A boat trip is one of the best ways to experience the Fens in summer. Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery as you float along peaceful waterways lined with reeds, wildlife and historic sights. Look out for river tours leaving from Ely and surrounding spots, perfect for a family day out or a relaxing date idea.
Waterside Walks
For those who prefer dry land, East Cambs has plenty of beautiful riverside paths to explore. The Jubilee Gardens in Ely offer a scenic starting point for walks along the River Great Ouse, with wide open skies, bobbing boats and grassy spots for a picnic or ice cream break.
Explore further afield and you’ll find peaceful routes near Littleport, Soham, and Wicken too, ideal for spotting birds, dragonflies and the occasional swan family.

Try Something Thrilling
If you’re after an adrenaline hit, East Cambs has you covered.
Cable wakeboarding is back for 2025 at Hannam’s Wake Hub, with sessions running throughout August. From School of Wake for younger riders to Ladies Club, Booster Sessions for beginners, and Air Trick Sessions for the more advanced, there’s something for every level.
Or try out Cambridge Aqua Park for an adventure for all ages. Create some splashing fun memories in a safe, family environment – perfect for the kids – and the big kids too!
Book ahead as spaces fill fast.
Seeking something a little calmer? Stretham Wild Swim is running weekly sessions at the Hub on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sunday mornings. It’s a refreshing way to start (or end) your day, and a perfect way to enjoy nature up close.
Whether you’re making a splash at the Aqua Park, gliding across the cable, or dipping into open water, there’s no better time to try something new.

Soak Up the Atmosphere at a Marina
East Cambs is home to several charming marinas where you can enjoy the gentle bustle of life on the water. Watch the boats go by, enjoy a spot of fishing, or simply settle in with a book and a view. Many marinas have cafés or picnic areas nearby, perfect for a lazy afternoon with friends or family.
The Fish and Duck Marina is a great location for day trips and offers hire boats ‘Jubilee’ and ‘Rose’ from the marina. Suitable for carrying a maximum of six people, ‘Jubilee’ and ‘Rose’ can be hired by the day or half day by booking in advance, or by the hour if not previously booked. The rates are all inclusive of fuel and lifejackets respectively.

End the Day with a Hearty Meal
After a day of riverside adventures, there’s nothing better than unwinding at a local pub. You’ll find plenty of cosy spots serving up hearty food, refreshing drinks, and a warm East Cambs welcome. Whether you’re after a Sunday roast, a ploughman’s lunch or a cold pint in a beer garden, you’re guaranteed to end your day on a high.
Whatever your idea of summer fun looks like, whether it’s full throttle or slow and scenic, East Cambs has a waterside spot for you. So pack your sunscreen, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to make the most of summer by the water.
