Wonderful wildlife
Autumn’s misty mornings and crisp, clear days in East Cambs are an ideal time to enjoy the wonderful succession of nature’s changing colours. It is also the time to look out for hundreds of varieties of migrant birds, that will move from colder parts in the north to the milder UK.
Visit Welney Wetland Centre before dawn to witness Whooper and Bewick’s swans taking to the skies in their hundreds as the sun rises across the Fen landscape. Or see the sky filled with birds coming in to land at dusk – an unforgettable sight.
The little-known Soham Meadow, lying on the side of the Soham Lode, has thick hedgerows bordering the meadow, which also provides valuable habitat for wintering flocks of redwing and fieldfare.
November welcomes one of East Anglia’s exceptional Christmas shopping experiences in the magnificent Ely Cathedral. Ely Cathedral Christmas Gift & Food Fair hosts 120 trade stalls in the Cathedral’s magnificent nave, its famous Lady Chapel and a heated marquee in the beautiful Cathedral grounds. You could combine this with a trip to the largest antiques centre in East Anglia, Waterside Antiques, which is a gentle stroll downhill towards the river.
If spectacular bonfires and fireworks are what you’re after, try the villages of Haddenham or Fordham, or one of two displays in city of Ely and celebrate Guy Fawkes Night – a brilliant, value for money family experience.
Something spooky
For something a little different, dust off your walking shoes and gloves to protect against that autumnal chill and discover the eerie side of Ely, steeped in history, with an atmospheric ghost tour by twilight.
