From historic gardens glowing with colour to wide skies filled with migrating birds, it’s the perfect time to wrap up warm and head outdoors.
Here are some places to experience the magic of autumn in East Cambs.
Chippenham Park Gardens
Chippenham Park Gardens are a treat at any time of year, but autumn is when the 35 acres of parkland truly shine. Lakes, woodland walks, and sweeping borders turn fiery red, orange, and gold, making it one of the best spots to soak up seasonal colour. Wander among formal gardens and wilder paths, spot sculptures tucked between trees, and pause at the lakeside for a moment of calm reflection.
Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve
The reedbeds of Wicken Fen rustle with autumn breezes, while migrating birds flock overhead. Boardwalks and wildlife hides make this a wonderful place for families to explore. In October, little ones can discover fairy doors hidden along the woodland walk, or join guided events to spot wildlife as the season shifts. Keep an eye out for dragonflies, owls, and the first flocks of winter visitors making their way across the fens.
The Fairy Doors and Folklore Family Trail runs from 18 October to 9 November, where you can take a relaxing stroll around the Woodland Walk and spot the fairy doors.
Discover Wicken Fen
WWT Welney Wetland Centre
Autumn marks the arrival of thousands of wild swans and other migrating birds at Welney, making it one of the UK’s most magical wildlife spectacles. Watch from the comfort of the hides as birds gather at dusk, or try a Welney After Hours evening, with owls, bats, and the sound of geese overhead.
For the early birds, you can meet the moths at 7am every Tuesday morning when park rangers check the light trap to see what species have been attracted from the night before. This is part of the reserve survey work, but is also a great opportunity to discover these wonderful insects.
Ely Country Park
Right on the edge of the city, Ely Country Park is a pocket of peace and space that comes alive in autumn. Paths wind through trees glowing with seasonal colour, and the riverside views are perfect for a crisp afternoon walk. The park also connects to longer walking and cycling routes like the Fen Rivers Way and Eel Trail, giving you plenty of options to stretch your legs.
