Outdoor adventure: Chippenham Park Gardens
If the weather is kind, take a trip to Chippenham Park Gardens, a thriving family estate rich in history and natural beauty. The gardens make for the perfect afternoon out with more than 35 acres of formal and informal gardens, borders, lakes, woodland walks and sculptures to explore.
Take a stroll along the Winter Snowdrop Walk: with amazing displays of ravishing aconites, glorious hellebores, and, of course, stunning snowdrops. Who says winter has to be grey! Saturday 18 January 2025 until Wednesday 16 April 2025. From 10am until 4pm. Last entry at 3pm.
You can even enjoy a well deserved sweet treat or warming in the on-site cafe, set in the idyllic garden settings.

Indoor fun: Ely Museum
When the weather calls for indoor fun, head to Ely Museum. Refurbished in 2021, this family-friendly museum brings local history to life with interactive exhibits and engaging displays. Meander through a wide range of displays, marvelling at ancient craftsmanship, fantastic folk traditions and turbulent tales of riotous revolts. Find out about eel fishing, fen skating, why the rivers are higher than the roads and why the soil is known as black gold.
Visitors may turn up to the museum without booking – making it the ideal solution for a last-minute rainy-day activity. The museum is open 10.30am to 4.30pm, however the first 30 minutes of the day are often busy and at certain times there may be a short wait for entry.
Family Tip: Check their website in advance for special half-term workshops and activities.
Animal encounters: WWT Welney
Wildlife encounters take place every day in WWT Welney, a wetland centre set in the heart of the Fens.
Stomp, splash and squelch your way around this half term and enjoy their annual mudfest! There’s a host of muddy activities to enjoy including; Mud art crafts, making seed bombs and learning to identify animal tracks. Mudfest takes place 15 – 23 February – so book your tickets soon to avoid disappointment.
If you fancy a less messy activity for bigger kids, join a guided walk to see hares and other wildlife in the Fens wetlands! Guides will take you for a walk onto an area of wetland not normally open to the public, but which is particularly good for hare spotting! Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, 1-2:30 pm, November-February. Free to members, included with admission.

With these family-friendly options, your half-term in East Cambridgeshire is sure to be filled with fun, laughter and quality time together. Happy exploring!
