So, you’ve decided that a trip to East Cambs is on the cards. How will you know where to start
Don’t fear – we’ve lined up an array of events and suggestions, no matter the season, to help you plan your ideal visit and make the most of your time here.
Winter walks
Pull on your woolly hat and scarf and stroll around Anglesey Abbey’s Winter Garden in the chilly winter air. In winter, things really come alive, like the carpet of white snowdrops that emerge through the frozen soil from January and are in bloom until late February.
The winter months can host some of the most spectacular birding opportunities in the eastern region. With nine hides at Wicken Fen, look out for flocks of waxwings in periods of really cold weather, and bitterns around the open water margins in periods of cold, icy weather.
For a forest walk, try Fordham Woods, a wet valley woodland of alder trees – the only native broadleaved tree to produce cones – which supports more than 90 insect species and many different fungi. While you’re in Fordham, why not book a tour at Dojima Sake Brewery in the stunning setting of the Fordham Abbey estate.

Sutton Winter Beer Festival
Held in the 14th century St Andrew’s Church, Sutton Winter Beer Festival usually takes place in February, selling craft beers, ciders and Ely Gin accompanied by live music in the evening. The festival has been taking place since 2008.
A selection of beers and ciders will be available alongside an array of chilli & curry (vegan options available) and pulled pork (veggie option available.) Sausage rolls & pork pies (gluten free options) will also be on sale each evening. Saturday afternoon’s family session will have a bouncy castle and soft play area for children.
All profits go to St Andrew’s Church.

Treetops Soft Play
If you’re looking for an indoor activity to keep the children entertained while you enjoy a nice hot drink and slice of cake, Treetops soft play centre has a three-storey play facility, a two-lane astro slide and designated baby and under 4’s sections.
